Adidas is the largest sportswear manufacturer in Europe and the second biggest sportswear manufacturer in the world, to its US rival Nike. It is best known for its 3 Stripe logo.
Adolf ("Adi") Dassler started to produce sports shoes in his mother's wash kitchen in Herzogenaurach, Bavaria, after 1918. In 1924, his brother Rudolf (Rudi) Dassler joined the business.
The brothers split up in 1947, with Rudi forming the rival sportswear company Puma. Both are still headquartered in the same small German town of Herzogenaurach.
