There are two main types of rugby. They include Rugby Union and Rugby League. They are similar in their play and differ greatly in the style of the game. Both games require the proper outfit of rugby boots and compression shorts to maintain safe and comfort while playing.
Rugby Union: This is the original style of the game that is told to have been created in the 1800’s in a school in England when a determined player simply picked up a ball and ran to the goal despite current soccer rules. Tackling ensued and the game of Rugby was soon created. Union style has fifteen players including eight forwards and seven backs.
Rugby League: This style of the game is told to have been created in North England by blue-collar workers. It is simpler in scoring than the Union type. It also differs by players. League Rugby only has six forwards.
There are many rule differences between each type. It is not a completely different sport, but one would need to learn the rules of each to play properly in both types of games. The fields also have subtle differences. Different parts of the world prefer one type of rugby to another as well. League is played in Australia and Northern England, while Union is played in France and many South American regions.
